Sijo Bruce Lee founded Jeet Kune Do (JKD) in 1967. Oxford dictionary defines Jeet Kune Do as: “a modern martial art incorporating elements of kung fu, fencing, and boxing, devised by American actor Bruce Lee.” Although it is a clear definition, it lacks the essence of JKD.  The translation truly defines it from Cantonese, literally ‘the way of the intercepting fist’.  When Sifu Carlos Osorio taught me my first lesson, he said, “We respect all martial arts. We never talk bad about other systems, and we never talk bad about other Martial Arts Instructors."  Until this day, I teach this to every student on their first day.  As Martial Artists, we must all learn from each other and respect each other's martial expression.
Sijo Bruce Lee sums this all up in this philosophy:  “Research your own experience; absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is essentially your own. Take what is useful and develop it from there.” Bruce Lee said and wrote many other things very similar to this thought, and to some extent, it characterizes the ideology of Jeet Kune Do.
